유학과 어학 연수 등을 결정하고 수속을 진행하면서 잊지 말아야 하는 것이 항공권 예약이다. 유학 대상 국가에 따라 항공편의 종류가 다르고 시기에 따라서는 예약이 어려울 수도 있기 때문에 미리 준비하지 않으면 안 된다.
항공권은 보통 여행사를 통하여 예약을 할 수도 있으나 최근에는 인터넷을 통한 예약이 가능하다. 예약 시에는 여행하고자 하는 사람의 정확한 영문 이름과 목적지, 출.도착일, 예약자의 전화번호 등이 필요하다. 항공권은 편도와 왕복권으로 구분되고 서비스에 따라 일등석, 비즈니스석, 일반석으로 나뉘어 있고 돌아오는 항공편의 날짜를 지정하지 않는 오픈 티켓도 있다.
항공권의 요금은 일반적으로 정상 운임 항공권과 할인 항공권의 두 종류가 있다. 정상 운임 항공권은 고시되어 있는 정상 운임을 전부 지불한 항공권을 말하며 발행일로부터 1년 동안 사용할 수 있다. 이 항공권은 여러 가지 제한 조건 없이 사용할 수 있으며 항공사의 규정에 따라 정상적인 환불도 가능하다. 그러나 일반적으로 정상 운임 항공권을 사용하는 여행자는 별로 없으며 대부분 각자의 조건에 따라 할인 항공권을 사용한다.
할인 항공권은 항공사나 여행사마다 제 각기 다른 여러 종류의 항공권을 판매한다. 단체권은 물론 어린이, 학생 등 여행자의 자격 조건에 따라 종류가 다양하다. 유학 준비생의 경우는 항공사에 따라 학생 할인권을 사용할 수도 있으니 예약 시 꼭 확인하자.
그러나 할인 항공권은 사용에 따른 여러 가지 제약이 있으니 먼저 확인하는 것이 좋다. 예를 들어 항공권의 유효 기간이 짧다든지, 항공사가 지정되어 다른 항공사로의 변경이 되지 않는 경우, 귀국편의 일정 변경이 불가능한 경우, 사용하지 않은 귀국 항공권에 대해 환불이 되지 않는 경우 등 까다로운 조건들이 있어 오히려 손해를 보는 경우도 많으니 본인의 사정에 따라 알맞은 항공권을 구입해야 한다.
항공 요금은 항공사별로 매우 다양하다. 보통 한국을 기점으로 하는 국적 항공기 보다는 국내에 취항하고 있는 외국계 항공사가 일반적으로 항공 요금이 저렴한 편이다. 그러나 이런 항공편들은 직항이 아닌 경우가 많고 한국 승무원이 없어 기내에서의 의사소통이 불편한 점도 있으니 참고해야 한다.
항공사에 예약이 확인 되어 있고 또 항공권을 소지하고 있더라도 72시간 전에 반드시 예약을 재확인해야 한다. 왜냐하면 항공사에 따라서 예약을 하고 항공권을 구입한 후에도 탑승하지 않는 승객이 많기 때문에 이를 대비해 좌석수 보다 많은 예약을 받아 놓거나 행적적인 착오가 있기 때문이다.
